Weight Loss

Most true experts now agree that weight loss is about portion control. It takes about fifteen minutes for the body to recognize that you have eaten something. In many European countries weight gain is not as much of a problem as in the US, and it is characteristic that they will take longer for meals. The average time that people spend eating at a McDonald’s in the US is fourteen minutes. They don’t give the body time to even realize that they have eaten something. In France the time spent at a McDonald’s is a bit better at 22 minutes. Taking these facts into account, try this formula:

  1. Only eat when you are hungry.
  2. When you finally do get hungry, prepare as little as one-third as much as you usually do for a meal.
  3. Eat that and wait fifteen minutes from the first bite.
  4. Check to see if you are still hungry. If you are, prepare one-half as much as you prepared in step 2 and go to step 3.
  5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 until you are no longer hungry. Remember to give your body fifteen minutes to determine if you are still hungry. You keep preparing smaller and smaller portions until you are no longer hungry.
  6. Send me the $15 you would have paid for the weight loss book you would have purchased to my PayPal account. 😉

HP 30″ Monitor

HP has introduced a 30″ competitor to the Apple Cinema Display. 2560×1600 requires two DVI inputs so your video adapter better have two DVI outputs. Pricing looks to start at less than $1,300 shipping included. Search text: HP (Hewlett-Packard) LP3065 Black 30″ Wide screen LCD Monitor.
HP (Hewlett-Packard) LP3065 Black 30
Quoting from consumersearch.com: “…the HP LP3065 (*est. $1,360) [is] the most likely contender to knock the Samsung [Syncmaster 305T] off its stand. In its list of top 30-inch LCD monitors, PC World gives a slight edge to the HP as the best, but the models are not directly compared. Conversely, TrustedReviews prefers some features (especially connectivity) of the HP, but Emeran [claims] the Samsung still has better image quality. The Samsung also has better viewing angles. ExtremeTech reports that the HP monitor produced better test results than the older 30-inch Dell LCD monitor. Reviewer Loyd Case makes some comparisons based on now outdated prices.”

Next Step in Radiology

My son, Greg, Jr., MD has accepted a fellowship from the Department of Radiology and Imaging at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) of the Cornell University Medical School in Manhattan for one year starting in July of 2009. He will be specializing in musculoskeletal imaging. HSS at present is nationally ranked as No. 1 in orthopedics and No. 3 in rheumatology by U. S. News & World Report. They pioneered the first total knee replacement. They are team physicians and athletic trainers for these teams and many, many more:

  • New York Knicks
  • New York Mets
  • New York Giants
  • Nets Basketball
  • New York Liberty

Greg is currently in his fourth year of radiology residency at Christiana Care in Delaware where his wife Jen is chief resident in medical pediatrics.

Quoted: “Hospital for Special Surgery is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. It is a member of the NewYork-Presbyterian Healthcare System and an affiliate of Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and cooperates in patient care with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital at NewYork Weill Cornell Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and The Rockefeller University. All HSS medical staff are on the faculty of Weill Medical College of Cornell University.”

When Greg was in high school I told him it was my opinion that the most important advances in medicine for the next twenty years would come from medical imaging. At that time, experiments were being performed by pioneers in 3D imaging. Since then, use of 3D imaging has advanced and the most important development just might be acceptance by the medical community and validation of these non-invasive procedures with invasive procedures on the same patients. Also, interventional radiology (IR) has developed into an important medical practice. IR is practiced by radiologists that work with a surgeon in the operating room to achieve minimal invasion and precise location of tumors and such using image guidance.

I think that the biggest advances are yet to come. The challenges include: high equipment cost, slow process for confirming 3D images, and a shortage of trained medical personnel for some modes. Propelling 3D medical imaging forward are: rapid advances in computers and software necessary for image processing, and visualizations that give people almost instant understanding.

Expect to see more posts on medical imaging in the future here.

And the best Blu-ray player is…

According to a 2007-05-08 article at C-net, the best player for Blu-ray movies is not a Blu-ray player. Quoted: “So far, the PlayStation 3 is the runaway winner, offering excellent Blu-ray playback in addition to its HD gaming and multimedia capabilities–all for hundreds less than the price of competing players. Moreover, the PS3 is the only player that boasts bleeding-edge HDMI 1.3 compatibility, and it’s going to remain in the line-up for years to come.”

Running Windows on the Mac

It’s really a shame that we can’t run Leopard – the latest Mac OS release – on a virtual machine. Apple does not allow that presumably so that you will buy Apple hardware. If you buy Mac hardware, you can run Windows on a virtual machine with Leopard as the platform. There are two choices and I’m not sure which is the better choice: Parallels Desktop 3.0 for Mac ($79 includes $25 Apple gift card) or VMware Fusion ($60 with rebate). I haven’t used Parallels. I’ve used VMware, but not VMware Fusion. If it’s as good as VMware Workstation, then it is outstanding.

Lyle Fong on Software as a Service

Lyle Fong spoke yesterday at Stanford. Highly recommended. His presentation is here. He spoke before a computer science class, CS309A, instructor for which is Timothy Chou.

Lyle discussed his experiences starting Lithium. Lithium powers (with web services) online communities for companies. Quoted: “A successful online community will provide a positive and productive environment for its members to learn, share, and connect over subjects that they care about. With enterprise communities, it is a chance for customers to interact with you, your other customers and your brand. Your ultimate goal is to help improve their overall experience with your company or organization whether it is through engaging them, supporting them or soliciting feedback from them.”

About Lyle — quoted: “Prior to starting Lithium Technologies, Lyle co-founded GX Media, where he was the CTO. He drove the development of Gamers.com, which was rated the #1 independent gaming portal by Nielson NetRatings. Lyle was instrumental in raising a total of $15M in funding led by CMGI, negotiating multi-million dollar technology licensing deals with Dell, Sony, AltaVista, and Ziff-Davis, and spearheading the spin-off of Lithium Technologies. Lyle was also the driving force behind the creation of technologies for professional gaming, including a global rankings system, tournament engine, and a real-time match reporting and spectating system. These technologies were the key success factors behind the AMD PGL, the most successful and highly acclaimed professional gaming league to date with over 100 million media impressions, and also numerous tournaments for Sega.”

The decision makers at Lithium did a comprehensive review of their product and came to the conclusion that their core competency is providing software as a service to empower companies to use their own user base for tech support. He suggests that there is a progression from the company doing all the work, to the company doing some of the work, to Web 2.0 in which the users become agents for the company providing advice and tech support.

My take: it seems that Lithium is creating silos company by company. After all, the real tech support challenge is the situation in which you have multiple companies’ products and you are trying to get them to work together. Classic example is you have a computer from Dell or Compaq, operating system from Microsoft or Linux, and device from someone else. Lithium will really take off when it supports many companies that work together and uses that for leverage.
